R65 - rebuild

So I have built the wall of my garage and have been able to bring my bike home from my dad's shed.

Now I need to find the carbs and the keys. - fairly sure they are still at dad's place.  Roll Eyes

The bike is rough - surface rust on the frame and the bottom of the fuel tank. The gearbox took it of the road with grumbling bearings. The motor was very tappity before it was parked up but the BM shop had adjusted the gap for me.

It looks like I have plenty of work ahead of me.

May as well yank the engine and start with the frame refresh. Your comment about rust on the fuel tank's bottom is worrisome. If the tank was not completely drained and dried prior to storage, the rust could be due to water in the tank that has slowly eaten through the steel. Perhaps remove the tank and use an inspection mirror and a flashlight -torch- to look inside. With the R65's single petcock, most rust issues initially show up on the opposite side. Also check for bits of the OEM tank liner material that may have flaked off.

If the tank is dry, add a bit of fuel and monitor the underside. During your rehab work, keep an eye out for a good used tank.

Keep the reports flowing. Ask questions. We all can make up some awesome answers. Some are even believable!

Thanks guys

I look forward to riding the hills around Brisbane for sure Chris!

Thanks Montie I was leaning towards a full frame off - it is going to take some time and money, might as well do the job right the first time.

I'll keep the thread updated.

my wife said "you have it pulled so far apart now, why not do the last bit and send the frame out to be sand blasted and then painted.

I wish I'd listened to her, I now have a sweet running R65 that looks very ordinary.

Strip the frame. you will regret it if you do not is my comment.

Good project and agree to do the whole thing at once, including the frame refresh.

Gotta say, that's a great looking wall as well!
