How much is the LS worth

Just sitting inside for the first time all summer as it has started to rain. Looking at Portland's Craigslist and saw a nice 82 R65 for sale $2800. A little farther down an 82 R65 LS $4900. Both low miles but it got me to thinking about how much the LS is worth. The guy with the LS did say he had put over 4 grand into the bike but we all know that you can't get out of a bike what you put into it.

On the LS you might want to see what the $4K was spent on.  If it was spent on stuff like trans rebuild, top-end overhaul, etc.  Also the mileage and cosmetic condition will figure heavily into the price.

On mileage, I don't really trust what the ODO says as the R65 (all BMW for that fact) odometers are prone to stopping working due to a plastic gear that slips.

For $2100, I would think that you could find the parts to make the first one (or yours) into an LS.

It depends on your location as well .
LS's seem to hold their value in southern California .

Here in the Phoenix area, there seems not to be much interest in the LS version, as well as a non-LS model anymore .

I see prices in the $2000-2500 area now in Phoenix, with no takers, as compared to 7 years ago, when $4500 was ' normal ' .

I looked at a silver '82 LS last weekend, $1900, after looking at the bike, I told the seller, that I would need to put $3000 into the bike, $4900 into a bike, that is worth only $2500-3000 .
He was not happy with my comment and since taken the ad down .

I did offer him $800, as a parts bike, he wasn't interested .

I will admit, that I paid $4000 for my '82 LS, in 2010 .

But there was a lot of work done and parts replaced .

He had over $5000 in receipts for work and parts .

Only work I have done, is replace throttle and 'choke' cables .

I'll give up my R65, when they pry my cold dead hands from the handlebars !!!!!
