Hello all. My name is Rob I have been a motorcyclist for most of my life, I have had a variety of different makes and models of various years from new to over 50 years old. My buddy gave (as in free) me this black beauty, a 1983 R65. 26K original miles but has been sitting for at least 10 years. I am in the process of going though all the bits and cleaning out old crusty fuel. I am looking forward to all the wisdom here. I am an amateur photographer so be prepared for lots of photos of the progress lol. Thanks again for letting me come aboard, I hope I can offer something as well. But of course I will need to figure out how to add more than one photo..... Undecided

Directly to the left of the attachment "browse box" there is the word ATTACHMENT with an arrow pointing down. You can use the arrow to ad as many attachment boxes as you want

Welcome

Nice looking BMW, bit of work to be done, but if the other contents of your garage are any indication, you are on top of that.

Love the X-files poster BTW.

Welcome.  The Vetter Quicksilver fairing is the perfect size for an R65.  We have one on wife.gov's '84...

Welcome Rob, quite a score for 'free' (minus your time and a few parts here and there), she's done hardly any miles really so if you like holding onto bikes this one has many, many more miles to feed you!  I've never seen one of those fairings and I like the zany shape and white pin striping, I'd probably lower the height of the clear windshield if it were me but everyone has different things they like.  I've had lots of help from the friendly inmates here, there are some very knowledgeable characters!

While going through my bike on various things I've had to fix I've come to the conclusion the airheads have benefited from decades of improvements to BMW's original boxer concept, very well designed to be easily maintained and made of high quality components.  Most of the more complex jobs are within reach of average wrenching ability because of this.

Although it has sat for 10 years I doubt if it will take much to get it on the road again, just the usual stripping and rebuilding carbs, brakes and learning how to tune up.  New tyres.  If you can afford it I recommend getting the Clymer manual for airheads '70 - '96, however as you and Tony have pointed out you're pretty familiar with it all anyhow.

Enjoy!

If the gas has gelled in 10 years acetone will dissolve it nicely.
