Hello all!

I am a new member who just acquired a 1984 r65LS, quite literally in boxes. I have been doing a ton of research into the specific tasks i need to accomplish to make her run and welcome input. I have experience working on dirt bikes, but this is my first BMW.

The Bike:
1984 r65LS
15,000 Miles
Sat for about 1.5 years before I bought it.

What I have in boxes:

Two r65 Tanks (one has a small pin hole leak by the petcock)
All the r65LS plastics, including the seat
Aftermarket Seat
All the engine covers/ panels
Carbs ( rebuilt by PO)
Air-box/ Breather Lines
Whole engine gasket set ( unopened)
Clymer Manual
5- Speed shifter ( one on the bike is broken)
Exhaust nuts ( PO cut off to remove )
2 into 1 exausht
2- black slip on reverse cones
header

How it sits
, the bike is currently sitting in the garage without the oil pan on it or wheels. The left hand cylinder has no piston rings ( PO attempted to paint the engine black and gave-up). There is no carbs/ air-box on the bike. No mufflers. All cables are de-attached.

Getting Started

My plan is to 1) install the piston rings 2) Reassemble left hand cylinder 3) make sure the carbs are in-fact rebuilt- then assemble 3) assemble air-box 4) random bits like throttle etc. 5) new battery 5) fresh oil in the engine/ transmission then see if she runs!

1. Piston rings from MAX BMW came in today.

Does anyone have a good reference on putting the rings on/ and in the right orientation?

Should I do both piston rings in both cylinders while i'm at it? or just one to see if she runs?

Can I do the rings without removing the piston?

Cylinder Head

Best reference for torque values? I have seen a few† numbers online/ and in the books.

Oil pan has been off the bike

The oil pan has been removed without oil for awhile, anything specific to look at? anyway to "clean" the engine (maybe use a magnet to make sure nothings in it ?

If anyone has any references for the tasks I need to accomplish, I would love to see them. I am going to take this project slow as to not screw up anything more. Thanks for the help and I will post updates as I move along!

Congratulations. It looks like a great score. 15000 miles is crazy low for a 35 year old motorcycle.

Do you know why the PO has removed the sump? Thatís a bit weird...

The LS is a really good looking bike even in standard trim. Did it come with the LS specific bits?

The Clymer manual is very detailed in terms of getting it all back together and would probably be a good investment, even with the very valuable knowledge of the people here.

Good luck with it.

Thanks . He was in the process of painting the engine and replacing all gaskets, which I have from him. I have LS seat for it, in red. I also have the just the lower front fairing, no battery covers. I have the clymer manual and have been doing my homework in preparation to do the oil pan gasket, left cylinder and a oil change and put the bike back together. I will post updates as i go

See if the rings have a "dot" or other mark on one side.  This is usually the "up" side. IIRC...
