i recently wrote somethign of an essay to put in a special itnerest group.

I've decided to put it here, Please correct any mistakes of mine, I look forward to discussion

That pretty much covers the subject without being too wordy .
Only possible minor issue I saw in the article, the picture of the DYNA coil, the picture shows a 1.5 ohm coil, not a .75 ohm coil .
The author of this article resides in Australia and mentions availability of replacement parts, systems for that region .

Thanks for the review - I will amend the error in relation to the Dyna coil.

Interestingly the "Alpha" ignition system sold by motorelekt is in fact a rebadged Emerald Isle system. Emerald Isle do not sell to the public, only to distributors who frequently rebadge (In Australia the importer, John Olive, markets them as "Red Center"). Anyway, it is a good thing as parts will continue to be available. As a side note, Emerald Isle make an extraordinary range of replacement parts for BMWs including such things as ignition switches and replacement and rebuildable drive shafts for paralever bikes.

Another error of my own making. I slipped a date and will have to correct to reflect that the 1978 R65 (1979 year model) had "points in a can" - that was me being dumb as we harbour what was a 1979 R65 at home.

But what floored me was someone's claim that early R80 G/S bikes also had "points in a can". I've reached out to snowbum annd if he confirms I will include that. I was under the impression that only the R65 ever wore a points bean can.

The other thing someone else pointed out is that as the later "Can" type coils were safe to use with the early  ICU, they would be a doddle for the later ICU capable of supporting the 0.5ohm coil. In fact I suspect that the later ICU would probably run even the early 6volt can coils without drama. Those coils are available for a lot less than the double ended coil.

Just when I thought I had my head around the variable, new ones pop up.

Version 2 with the errors kindly pointed out by Bob Roller corrected.

I am now pretty confident that the informaiton in the doc is correct. I have put it into PDF form merely for ease of transport - it is unlocked and can be easily turned back into an editable document by any number of free online converters.

Tony, this cured my curiosity about the Motorrad Electric ignition systems .
Seemed to me that the cost to develop and manufacture a part like that for a somewhat limited range of BMW motorcycles to be viable for a small provider of aftermarket BMW parts .

Very well written Tony. Both informative and amusing! A rare combination in dry technical articles.

Mind you, I wish I had read all of that 2 weeks ago before my JPT bean can connector disintergrated when I looked sideways at it!

I solved my issue with a connector kit from EME in the US which was reasonably priced and arrived pretty quickly. I was surprised to see the array of airhead specific replacement items that they sell including the reman bean can and loom sections. Iím impressed.

Their connector kit is almost a direct swap, but not quite..... The included rubber insulating shroud is configured for 3 conductors side by side entering the rear of the shroud, whereas the wire coming from the bean can has the 3 wires in a single insulated wire, so I needed to modify this to fit my application, so itís not quite as pretty as the original installation which uses a single entry shroud.

The only contribution I would make to the article after my recent experience is that the wire bale clip on the JPT connector presses in to release the male connector, rather than lifting up. That might be different on the original connector though.

Yeah I agree, well written Tony and a laugh too.
In answer to gedinoz about the wire bale clip, I've still got the original JPT connector intact on the trigger wire and in half a dozen or so times of disconnecting the awkward thing I've only ever lifted the wire bale clip off. Probably now I've mentioned it I'll break it next time... but now I know replacements and alternatives are pretty easy to come by.

I think there are a couple of different versions of the bale clip.  I've seen one that had some indentions in each side that you had to clear, but another where all the sides are straight.

I have just bought a pair of 3-Way JPT connectors for $AU30 including post.

Worth storing away as significantly cheaper than the local mail order suppliers (If you are going to repaiur your beancan and make a tester you need a male/female pair)
