Auto parts price variences

Lately I've noticed a large swing in pricing of auto parts.

At 110,000 miles it's past time for a timing belt/water pump on my 2007 Subaru Forester. If I hurry and get it installed it will be the "first ever" timing belt I've replaced with the other one still in one piece!

I started with the local chainstores:

Napa....... best I could do there was $296.
Autozone.......$318 best there

Then I went to Rock Auto(where I usually end up)

Rock Auto had the kit for $176 + shipping......lets try one more place. I took the Rock Auto part number and put it into Amazon.

Bingo,  Amazon had it for $104 & free shipping.( it is setting next to me as I type, got it in 2 days) It sure pays to shop even when the price seems fair.

The $176 at RA did seem fair. Timing belt, new tensioner, water pump, all the idlers and gaskets and oil seals. I could have stopped there, but I went the next step and put another $80 in my pocket...……. now,  if I can just get the darn thing on before the pistons eat my valves!!

I had the same experience with the fuel pump for my truck. $200 swing in price.

Normally, Rock Auto has the best pricing anywhere.

The only Subaru I've had was a 1971 4 door crackerbox.  Looked like one of the old boxy Fiats.  I thrashed it to death and then my Dad drove it for years after I went into the Army and finally just rotted out from salt.

This one is a hold over from when I lived in the mountains at 7500ft altitude. A lot of days in the winter they wouldn't let you in or out without chains or 4wd. The Highway Patrol would block the road, so if you wanted to go home, you complied or it was "motel time" 48 miles from home...…. arrrrgh
